Spring Clean Your Life

Colorful flowers and fresh-cut lawns are sure signs spring has arrived. However, the clutter of life can sometimes overshadow the growth and opportunity this time of year brings. Try a few of the tips below to find out how spring cleaning requires a lot more than just vacuuming and dusting.

Manage Spending

Does it feel like you spend your paycheck a little faster every month? Consider creating a budget. Start by making a list of everything you spend money on, down to the smallest purchase. Then, prioritize those items, with the most important expense listed as number one. Divide up your paycheck from there, and assign specific spend limits to each item. The most important step is: stick to your budget. If you know where your paycheck is going each month, it could be easier to say no to impulsive, unnecessary purchases.

Organize Belongings

It can be overwhelming to sort through old, unused personal belongings. Rather than giving up and stockpiling everything in your attic, create three piles to sort items into — one pile to keep, one pile to give away and one pile to throw away. Better yet, use storage tubs or trash bags to keep each pile contained. Commit to giving away or throwing away a certain number of items to resist holding onto unnecessary clutter. House Beautiful* recommends getting rid of anything that has gone unused for six months or more.

Label Storage

After you have disposed of the trash pile and donated the give-away pile, it is time to tackle the keep pile. If you plan to stash the majority of your belongings in a storage unit or attic, it must be neatly organized. Consider purchasing large, secure packing tubs and filling each box strategically. After each container is filled, write the contents on a piece of paper and tape it to the lid of the tub. Now, each time you are looking for something in storage, it will be easy to find and easy to repack. Be sure to update the lists each time you remove or add anything.

Declutter Finances

Not all clutter is obvious — the balance on your credit card is another important item to take control of. While large balances can be overwhelming and seem unending, there are options for making the amount easier to manage. Consider transferring your balance to an Arvest Consumer Credit Card. You will enjoy 0%1 APR for 12 billing cycles on balance transfers and purchases. After that, your rate will be based on credit worthiness, 14.65% to 21.00%. You can also earn up to $1002 in bonus rewards. Try to use the promotional period to pay off a large portion of the card’s balance and ease the burden on your account.

Assign Tasks

Rather than trying to conquer your entire to-do list in one day, The Spruce* recommends scheduling a week of smaller projects — focusing on one project each day. This will help to avoid burnout and make the list seem less daunting. With each assignment completed, cross an item off and see your progress in real-time. Short on time? Consider involving every member of your household. If each person completes their share of the responsibilities, you can declutter your life in a fraction of the time.
