Fall is a busy time for traveling. Maybe you’re headed on a roadtrip to take in the fall foliage or headed to see the family for the holidays, no matter what you’re traveling for, we have some tips to get you travel ready.

  • Driving? Make sure your vehicle is road ready. Is your vehicle maintenance up to date? Check your tire pressure and don’t forget your spare! Check the age of the battery, your vehicle maintenance person can help you decide if it’s time for a new battery before you make your trip. Is your cell phone charger in the car? Do you have a navigation app on your phone or a map? Do you have an emergency kit, just in case?
  • Flying the friendly skies? Consider flying on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Saturdays when airlines generally offer cheaper fares. Make sure you are signed up for the airline’s frequent flyer program to earn rewards. Think about contingency plans for the house and pets should your flight be canceled or delayed.
  • What about Fido? If your pets aren’t making the trip with you, arrange for boarding or a pet-sitter as soon as you know your travel plans, so you don’t run the risk of them being booked up. Check now with your veterinarian to make sure your pets have current shots and can stay in a boarding environment.
  • Before you go. Ask a friend or neighbor to collect your mail or newspaper while you are gone so that it’s not obvious that no one is home. Ask them to also remove any marketing door hangers placed on your front door – those are a sure sign that you’re away! Consider putting a timer on your exterior lighting and a few lights inside.
  • Be anti-social. Don’t share your travel plans on social media. As excited you may be about your travel plans, announcing on social media that you’re headed out of town for a week is only letting people know that your home will be empty.

With some advance planning you can help provide some peace of mind while traveling.
